STREETWEAR ART

Milou and I had so much fun to go through the drawings and stories we received from friends, kids from her school and even abroad (as far as Japan). What we really liked is that kids are drawing a positive future on the internet. Happy kids, smileys and hanging out online with their friends without worries.

So we instantly knew that the art should be something positive. A kid feeling comfortable on the internet, enjoying him/herself, surfing the perfect wave, shielded against online threats.

We handed over instructions to illustrator Iryna from Ukraine. We are so happy with the end result and will wear this with proud.

You are allowed to download and share the art work. Print the design on a t-shirt, tote bag or button and spread the message #KidsSafeOnline. Hopefully it will spark of lots of cool ideas to make the internet safer for kids! The art is licensed under Creative Commons BY-NC-ND 4.0 but if you want to reuse it under different conditions, contact us: hessel+milou@newmediasquad.com

Why DO WE WANT A

SAFE INTERNET FOR KIDS

Hello! My name is Milou (9) and I live in The Netherlands. For the past few years, my parents have allowed me to use some websites on the internet.

My parents run their business on the Internet since before I was born. I guess they are fans. But I am not allowed to use a lot of websites and apps.

Why? My Mum and Dad tell me many videos, photos, apps and games are not safe for children.

My Dad (Hessel) told me about an event, a festival, organised by the people behind the Internet browser Firefox. This event is called “Mozilla Festival”. It is all about creating a better Internet together and making it safe for all to use.

Dad? Do they allow children to participate? Can we ask them to build a safe Internet for kids?

My dad asked the organisers if we could invite other parents and children to discuss what “a safe internet for kids” means and share the outcomes during the virtual festival (March 8-19, 2021).

And guess what, they love the idea and they said yes!

The deadline has passed but…

Continue to Participate!

Print the Streetwear Art (above) on stickers, a t-shirt, tote bag or button. Or start a discussion with parents and/or kids about a safer internet for kids. Hopefully this will spark of more ideas!

Feel free to send me and Milou an email with your feedback: Do you like the project and streetwear art? Will you share or wear the design? Did you ever discuss a safe internet for kids with your family members? Are you motivated to somehow make the internet safer for kids? Would be so nice to hear from you! HOW CAN you HELP?

Please discuss at home what “safe” internet for kids means.

** THIS IS HOW WE ASKED PEOPLE TO PARTICIPATE BEFORE FEB 28, 2021 **

1. Please send in a drawing or …

What do kids (ages 6-10 years) and their parents think when asked what a “safe” Internet actually means?

For example: Families with WiFi and connected devices at home might worry about how easy it is for kids to play violent games or watch unfiltered video content on social media.

Or they worry about people online with bad intentions, anonymous bullying and kids sharing private information with the world.

Please help us:

  1. Discuss at home what a “safe” internet for kids means.

  2. Can you capture this in a drawing? Or write a short story and highlight the keywords.

  3. Email us your work before February 28, 2021

Or email us via

hessel+milou@newmediasquad.com

Outcome?
Inspired by all your answers, words and drawings we will create digital art!*

* We will publish the artwork online for free under an open license. You will be able to download the artwork and use it to create your own stickers, t-shirts, handbags etc.

2. Do we need a symbol / icon?

One more thing!

In our country, when selecting a television program or movie, icons are used to inform parents about the content. They look like this.

These icons are advising parents on harmful elements that a certain production contains.

These icons are advising parents on harmful elements that a certain production contains.

Please help us:

  1. Should there be a symbol or icon for websites and apps to advise parents it’s safe for kids?

  2. Do you have a suggestion what it should look like?

  3. Inspired? Design us a symbol that will be internationally recognised as a safe Internet for kids under 10?

  4. Email us your idea before February 28, 2021

Or email us via

3. Thank You!

This project will be successful when you have had a discussion at home about the safety of the Internet for kids.

With your feedback we want to inspire more people during the virtual Mozilla Festival.

In the first week before the event we will ask an artist to go through all the “safe Internet for kids” drawings / feedback and create a digital artwork.

We will share this with you and the world free of charge. We will send you an email in the second week of March.

You can then use this artwork on your t-shirts, bags, caps or backpack stickers – we look forward to seeing what you design :-) and one day we hope to meet in person.

Thank you for participating!
